Is sleeping on Amtrak comfortable?
As one who has traveled on many Amtrak trains, I can tell you that many people sleep very well in the seats. They are bigger, have more leg room and are more comfortable than airplane seats. There is a privacy in a sleeper or roomette that you won't find in the main cabin.
The average Amtrak Coach seat measures 23 inches in width (compared to around 17 inches for airplane equivalent seating) with exceptional legroom and the ability to recline for an even more comfortable sleeping position.

There are 4 Sleeping Car Room Options
Amtrak's Sleeping Car accommodations provide overnight travelers the choice of a roomette, bedroom, bedroom suite (two adjoining bedrooms) that can accommodate one to four people, and accessible bedrooms. In a roomette, daytime seating converts to beds at night.
Each bedroom has the capacity of two adults (with an option for a third), one to two suitcases and are 6'6” x 7'6”. Unlike roomettes, our bedrooms also have an in-room toilet, shower and a sofa that converts to a bed. Travelers looking to stretch out and upgrade from our roomette should explore our bedroom option.
The conductor will place a destination ticket in the holder above your seat. He will usually remind you within 30 minutes of your stop. If you are asleep, he will awaken you.
Roomettes have no sink or toilet facilities except on some cars on single level trains. Accessible rooms on single level sleeping cars have the same facilities as bedrooms, above. Accessible rooms on bilevel trains have a toilet and sink only, no shower. Family rooms on bilevel trains have no facilities.
They are designed for two people. Just be sure you like the other person, it's tight quarters.
Sleeper car had two seats facing each other that folds into a bed and a fold down bed above and a curtain that encloses it. A roomette has a set of bunk beds a couple chairs and a table and a door you close.
Can you bring food on Amtrak?
You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars. Personal food and beverages are allowed in the upper level of Superliner Sightseer Lounges.
Which Amtrak trains feature public showers for passengers? All modern Amtrak sleeping cars (Superliners and Viewliners) have showers for passengers. The deluxe bedrooms have their own showers in the rooms. Other sleeper passengers can use a public shower, which is downstairs on the Superliner sleepers.

There are TVs in the lounge car that the attendant used to put a DVD in for everyone to watch but I haven't seen the TVs working in awhile. On the Coast Starlight the Pacific Parlour (First Class Only) has a theater below and usually they have classical music playing throughout the upper level.
The coach seats are very comfortable. Most people are ok sleeping in them for one night. I'd be weary of more than that however.

It's best to avoid sleeping on public transportation if possible, but if you do find yourself nodding off, try to stay in a well-lit area and keep your belongings close to you. It's also a good idea to set an alarm on your phone to wake you up before your stop.

Only passengers who have a valid ticket for sleeper car accommodations can bring personal alcohol on their trip. Additionally, you're restricted to consuming the alcohol in your sleeper car only — it can't be consumed in public areas, including the cafe and dining cars.
Passenger Discount for Seniors
Amtrak travelers 65 years of age and over are eligible to receive a 10% discount on most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. On cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, a 10% Senior discount is applicable to travelers aged 60 and over.
