Can you sit wherever you want on Amtrak?
Your seat will be automatically assigned when you complete your reservation. You may change your assigned seat and choose a different seat at any time after your booking is complete by viewing your reservation in the Amtrak app or on Amtrak.com. There is no fee to change your seat.
In almost all cases, Amtrak seats are not assigned. The exception is Acela Express route seats and business class seating on the Northeast Regional, Carolinian, Palmetto, and Vermonter. Otherwise, Amtrak has a first-come, first-serve seating policy for coach seats.
If the train company does not offer seat reservations on the train you are travelling on, the reservation ticket will specify the date and time of travel. In this case, you may sit in any available seat on the specified train, appropriate to the class of your ticket. See our Advance ticket page for more information.
Each passenger paying a fare will be entitled to a seat, to the extent coach seats are available. Passengers are entitled to one seat per fare, to ensure other paying passengers are not excluded. Unless specific seats are assigned, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Enjoy the flexibility of changing the dates and times of your departure and/or return trip or feel free to upgrade your seat or room options. Changes can only be made if there is an email address on file through Amtrak.com or modify reservations through the Amtrak App.
Seat reservations aren't guaranteed though and some Train Operating Companies (TOCs) don't offer seat reservations at all. Even without a seat reservation your tickets are still valid, and you can sit in any vacant unreserved seat. Sit in any vacant unreserved seat except First Class.

On the other hand, most airlines offer passengers the option to select a seat at check-in time. Or if the flight got overbooked and you haven't yet selected a seat, you might get forbidden from traveling on the flight, and note you may receive the option to get a booking on the alternate flight for free.
There is priority seating on all of our trains, usually near the doors and marked with a P sign. Most people are happy to give up their seat to someone more in need of it. Simply show your card to someone sitting in a priority seat and they'll see that you have a need for one of these seats.
In a purely reserved seating (also known as allocated seating or assigned seating) scheme, each ticket is assigned a specific seat in the venue at the time of purchase. Seats are typically identified by row number/letter, seat number, and sometimes by section.
What are the best seats on the Amtrak?
For the smoothest ride, get a seat equidistant between the trucks (wheels). This way a hard bump will be only half as bad. If you want to watch the train ahead going through curves, get a window seat near the rear of the coach.
Bringing Your Food Aboard
You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars.
If you purchased a Reserved Seat ticket, the seat number will be on your ticket. If you purchased Coach, there is no reserved seating, so there is no seat number on your ticket. you should get to the train early to get the seat of your choice.
The average Amtrak Coach seat measures 23 inches in width (compared to around 17 inches for airplane equivalent seating) with exceptional legroom and the ability to recline for an even more comfortable sleeping position.
Passengers who “no show” or do not cancel prior to departure forfeit the entire value of their “no show” segment. This policy applies to tickets paid in USD (including via Gift Certificate) as well as tickets paid with Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
Each bedroom has the capacity of two adults (with an option for a third), one to two suitcases and are 6'6” x 7'6”. Unlike roomettes, our bedrooms also have an in-room toilet, shower and a sofa that converts to a bed. Travelers looking to stretch out and upgrade from our roomette should explore our bedroom option.
sometimes we'll allocate you a space on the train rather than a specific seat; this means you are booked to travel on that train and can sit in any vacant seat for your class of travel.
Priority seating is designed to be easily accessible for passengers who need them. These seats are intended for: Disabled people. Elderly people. Pregnant women.
Firearms or ammunition
Black powder, percussion caps or any ammunition used with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion-cap ignition system or similar type are never permitted; this includes self-loaded, gunpowder-based modern ammunition. *Amtrak accepts no liability for theft or damage for any items brought onboard.
Just read on. While doing reservation at railway counter you can request the booking clerk to allot seats together. And if seats are available, more often than not the railway booking clerk at reservation counter is happy to book all the passengers mentioned on reservation form together.
How can I avoid paying for seat selection?
How do you avoid a seat selection fee? If you're traveling with a group, the best way to avoid a seat selection fee is to book your seats at the same time. If the airline is assigning seats for you, it typically seats people under the same record locator number together.
Step 2: Skip seat selection if you have to pay
But no matter what, you should skip seat selection altogether if the airline is trying to make you pay. Here's an example. When trying to book a United basic economy fare, you might see that every available seat carries a charge, even the really lousy ones in the back.
Airlines charge for seat selection for a few reasons. Firstly, it can be a way for airlines to generate additional revenue. By offering seat selection as an optional add-on, they can keep base ticket prices lower and allow passengers to customize their experience based on their preferences.
Q is usually used for test trains, and Z is usually used for Short Term Plan workings which don't usually run. Z can be used for test trains, and charter trains. For timetabled freight, a V or an A usually indicates a western region freight working (such as from Theale, or Acton).
