Overview[]
Artillery is one of the first researchable units that can attack by distance, which makes them very useful. They are good against both infantry and armored units. Their drawbacks are their relatively slow movement speed and weakness in close combat.
They cost few resources and need only an Industrial Complex lv. 1 and Infrastructure lv. 1, which allows mass production, that can be advantageous, since they cause very little damage alone.
Some people may prefer Railroad Guns instead. They have longer range and deal more damage, but are more expensive and not available as early, not to mention that they are vey slow on land. Artillery has a motorized counterpart, which is much faster and slightly stronger: Self-Propelled Artillery.

Strategies[]
Artillery is essential to every army. They are a simple and elegant solution for obliterating enemy troops without losing any of your troops. Bombard big enemy stacks while they are offline to give your enemies depression for the rest of their day. As the saying goes, no matter how good your anti-tank or anti-air is, you cannot shoot down artillery shells. The cheapness of artillery allows massive productions of these beauties, which will spell doom to any troop not moving fast enough. Artillery are vulnerable to anything that comes to contact in close combat, as its defense stats shows. Artillery is also useful to defend coastal areas from enemy fleets.
AI Luring[]
AI luring is a common strategy used with artillery and other ranged units to destroy AI units. A feature in the behavior and movement of the AI allows this trick to work. To start, get a stack of artillery or other ranged units (at least 5 per stack), and direct them to bombard an AI stack. Once the bombardment starts, the AI will send all the units in the stack except one to the source of the bombarding, i.e. your ranged units. Now that the province is lightly defended, it is now easily able to be conquered, just send some infantry or tanks to do the job.
Example: A stack of 8 AI units controlled by Finland (an AI) is waiting in Helsinki. You send a stack of artillery to bombard the 8-stack. The AI sends 7 of the units off to move to the location of the artillery and engage in combat with them, and keeps the last unit in the city. You send in a tank stack to defeat the remaining infantry unit and capture the city, while the artillery severely damages the 7-stack before it can engage combat. You can then send other ground or air stacks to finish them off.
This strategy even works with naval ranged units!
