Seven communist parties have been elected to European Parliament in seven different countries.
Today, the existing communist states in the world are in China, Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and North Korea. These communist states often do not claim to have achieved socialism or communism in their countries but to be building and working toward the establishment of socialism in their countries.

Soviet is from the Russian sovet, "governing council," and its Greek source, symboulion, "council of advisors." After the Russian Revolution, the term soviet was used for local governments elected by workers, as well as the higher councils that those local soviets elected in turn.
