The OV-chipkaart is a card you can use to travel on every mode of public transport in the Netherlands. You must top up the balance on your card in order to travel. If you have an NS-Business Card, then you do not need to top up the balance, because there will be billed afterwards instead. You do need to check in and out when you travel.
Which OV-chipkaart options are there, and where can you purchase one?
You can choose between apersonal or anonymous OV-chipkaart, both of which cost € 7.50. If you sign up for a 1-year NS season ticket, you'll receive a free personal OV-chipkaart (except for Flex Basis and Flex Weekend Voordeel).
You can also opt for a single-use chipkaart, which is a paper ticket with a chip.
The anonymousOV-chipkaart and single-use chipkaart can be bought at the NS-ticket machine.

With this smart card you can pay for your trip in the Netherlands using all forms of public transport: bus, train, tram or metro. There is no separate OV-chipkaart for tourists.

The card can be fully personalized, but it's not a requirement. Since there is no separate OV-chipkaart for tourists, a visitor to our country may use a disposable chip card or an 'anonymous OV-chipkaart'.
An anonymous OV-chipkaart is not personal. That's why you can't add subscriptions to this card. You can share an anonymous card with multiple people, but not simultaneously.
OVpay ⟩ Check in and out with your contactless debit card, credit card or mobile to travel by bus, tram, metro or train. No registration is necessary. You pay the same travel fares you would if you were using an OV-chipkaart. When you check into a bus, tram or metro, you always pay a boarding fee of €1,08.
