Nobel Foundation raises the amount for this year's Nobel Prize awards to 11 million kronor. STOCKHOLM (AP) — The Nobel Foundation said Friday that it will raise the award amount for this year's Nobel Prizes by 1 million kronor ($90,000) to 11 million kronor ($986,270) as the Swedish currency has plummeted recently.

As of 31 December 2020, the assets controlled by the Nobel Foundation amounted to 5.2 billion Swedish kronor (approx. US$630 million as of 31 December 2020).

Each year the Nobel Foundation decides on the cash prize awarded to each Nobel laureate. The cash prize is 8 million SEK (about US$1.1 million or €1.16 million). Sometimes this goes to a single individual or the prize may be split between two or three recipients.

As per Alfred Nobel's instructions, the capital is invested in “safe securities” and the returns on that investment are added to the prize pot. As Nobel Foundation's funds have fluctuated over time the prize on offer has done the same, ensuring that the Nobel Prize could last for generations.

The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901 and carried a cash award of SEK 150,782, equivalent to SEK 8.8 million in 2022, which was roughly $900,000. The 2023 Nobel Prizes were worth SEK 11 million, which is about the same amount as 1901, adjusted for inflation.
