How do you structure a commentary effectively? ›

In most commentaries, each piece of evidence receive one to two paragraphs of coverage. Each piece of evidence should support the main point (or thesis statement) while each piece should provide a solid structure for taking an angle on the topic and issue at hand.

As you listen, try to identify the structural parts of the commentary (lede, scene, argument, evidence and conclusion). What was the lede/teaser? What was the scene? What argument/evidence did he present?

Examples of commentary in a Sentence

The television show features political commentary by well-known journalists. The magazine includes humor and social commentary. The book is a commentary on her experiences abroad. I like listening to his social commentaries.

You are going to need at least two sentences of commentary for every detail sentence. A good rule of thumb is that your commentary should be twice as long as your details. Otherwise, your paper is just full of facts.

Commentaries are short (~2500 words*) articles covering a contemporary issue that is relevant to the journal's scope. They are usually commissioned by the journal, but we do on occasion consider and peer review unsolicited submissions.

In a commentary essay, you provide a detailed analysis of the writing piece given to you. Now you might be thinking that what comes under "detailed analysis"? Well, you will be commenting on the theme, language, and other characteristics of the passage. Writing commentary is not that difficult.

Even when giving commentary in the form of an opinion, avoid using subjective phrases like “I hope,” “I believe,” and “I think.” These are just throwaway phrases. They are redundant (you wrote the essay, so it is obvious you think, believe, or hope what is written), and they reduce your credibility.

Introduction:Start with a hook to grab the reader's attention, such as an interesting fact, a provocative question, or a relevant quote. Provide some background information on the topic to give context to your commentary. Present your thesis statement at the end of the introduction.

Here we go: The job of commentary is to tie the evidence to the topic sentence. This is where the student offers OPINION about how the factual evidence illustrates the truth of the topic sentence. By connecting the evidence to the topic sentence and the topic sentence to the thesis, the commentary defends the thesis.

Similarly, a commentary essay has two ends that secure the entire content. One is the introduction that diverges and helps the reader to get familiar with the idea. The other is a conclusion, which converges and wraps up your essay. Here you cannot state any new ideas.

This is interesting/fascinating/disturbing because… It is important to notice that... The author reveals/shows/presents/emphasizes/suggests... The author wants the reader to understand...
